Concert Ticket: Original Velvet Underground ticket, Prague, June 1993

In 1993, the legendary The Velvet Underground, disbanded for years, reunited and undertook a European tour. This may have been for the sake of bass guitarist Sterling Morrison, who was in failing health. The original VU band members: Lou Reed, John Cale, Maureen Tucker and Morrison, played in several European cities. There were plans to continue on with an American tour, but Reed and Cale had a falling out, and the band never played together again. Morrison died in 1995. The concert in Prague was of special interest because Lou Reed had struck up a friendship with the President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, who was a big VU fan. In fact, the political uprising that turned out the Russian forces in 1989 without firing a shot became known as "The Velvet Revolution." President Havel was in attendance at this concert, held in the "Palace of Culture" that formerly hosted Soviet-style conferences and lectures. This ticket is from that concert. It is actually a ticket sleeve, as ticket stubs were not returned and people were not allowed to leave or re-enter the concert venue. The Czech half of the sleeve says "Palace of Culture in Prague, 13 June 1993." and lists several prominent sponsors of the event. The sleeve has been flattened out so that both sides can be seen at the same time when framed. On the inside is the drawing of a Warhol-like banana. Other than a little roughness to the paper where the sleeve was separated, this ticket is in very good condition with no tears, holes, or stains. This is a very rare memento of a very special occasion in the history of rock and roll.
