Vinyl: 1st press 1962 LP, Jazz at Massey Hall, Parker, Gillespie, Mingus, Roach -VG+

Here's your chance to buy an important piece of jazz history for a very reasonable price. This one is priced to sell quickly, since I'm moving rapidly to liquidate my lifetime collection of LPs. I bought this record--new--in 1963 at the Harvard Coop store in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Some consider this the best live recording of Charlie Parker. It's a concert in Toronto in 1953--all the more amazing because the quintet had four other hugely talented jazz musicians. Each in his own way was a leader and inspiration for the bebop movement.

This is the last recorded performance of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie playing together--the two most famous bop musicians of that era.

The tapes from the 1953 concert sat in the vault for three years--most likely because the lengthy songs with multiple great solos didn't fit on 78 rpm records, which were the prevailing medium at that time. Debut Records--owned by Mingus and Roach--came out with an LP in 1956. Mingus had the rights to this LP and in 1960 gave them his former wife and her new husband Saul Zaentzes, who shortly thereafter became the head of Fantasy Records. There you go -- now you know the whole story!

Zaentzes (we imagine) celebrated receiving this wonderful gift by pressing the tracks on very attractive translucent red vinyl.
