Miles Davis signed Sketches of Spain vinyl album (1980's pressing). As well as signing the front of the album 'Miles', Miles has added a double self portrait in black and brown felt pen, initialling it, 'MD.' The image is not unlike the subsequent cover for the Amandla album, only this has the profile portrait on the left. Ian Carrs's biography of Miles also mentions him drawing a head and trumpet in Ian's book after a press conference in the eighties. The frontal portrait on my album has Miles with a moustache, so I'm hazarding a guess that the drawing dates from around 1985. The later Amandla cover was a collaboration with girlfriend artist Jo Gelbard. I believe she had introduced Miles to drawing and painting, particularly the felt pen drawings typical of Miles’ late comeback period.
I have enjoyed owning this album which was acquired from the collection of a record producer some years ago.
