One of two " holy grails" of The Beatles very early, first release, musicassette albums.

The very first cassette release of "Abbey Road" by The Beatles in November 1969 (at the same time as the vinyl album) - as denoted by the DARK GREEN paper labels, the printed PCS 7088 catalogue number on the clear leader tape (see photo) and the elementary newspaper design of the inlay with its original vinyl album artwork.

This was the second Beatles album to be released on cassette - the first being "Sgt. Pepper" two years previously in October 1967. which also has the dark green paper labels and catalogue number printed clear leader tape.

Unusual and very collectible because the cassette format never really took off with the public until 1972, when everyone started installing stereo players in their cars for music on the move, and by that time The Beatles cassettes were sold in reissue form with "all gold" inlays and different coloured labels in yellow or white.

The dark green paper labelled Beatles cassettes and their unique clear leader tapes with their printed catalogue numbers, of which only "Abbey Road" and "Sgt Pepper" exist - (this is what identifies them as the very first releases) rarely come up for sale as so few were manufactured at a time when cassettes had not become widespread or popular enough. They were basically an experimental marketing exercise by EMI, who were wary that their enormous Beatles vinyl sales would be affected.

These first dark green labelled cassettes were produced by Philips, the Dutch electronics firm who pioneered the cassette format, for EMI - before EMI opened their own tape duplicating facilities at Hayes in Middlesex in July 1970.

Played and tested. No breaks, edits, fading or drop outs. Perfect. The labels have very minor raising, the inlay is clean and free of marks and stains and the original Norelco case is complete and intact.

An excellent condition example.
