Right around the same time jazz legends such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock showed a willingness to embrace influences of psychedelic rock in their music, two titans of the blues in Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf released albums in that style as well. However, a main difference is that while Miles and Herbie's shift in direction appeared to be more natural, the bluesmen strongly disliked the stylistic change - it was forced upon them by their producer, Marshall Chess, hoping to appeal to a younger audience.The experiment largely worked on that front, as it was his best-selling record in quite some time, and with the exception of his next album After the Rain he primarily went back to making traditional blues. And despite Muddy's objections, this album stood the test of time pretty well - you can hear artists like The White Stripes getting a ton of inspiration from this.
