Hooteroll?
Vinyl LP - Douglas 5
VG+/VG First Pressing (1971)
featuring members of the Jerry Garcia Band

Condition: Very Good + Vinyl and Very Good Cover. Vinyl was play-tested on both sides and plays very well, with good fidelity and some occasional minor background noise. Cover is intact with moderate wear, and a partial tape repair on back side of gatefold.

Hooteroll? is a jazz-rock fusion album by Howard Wales and Jerry Garcia. Prior to making Hooteroll?, Wales and Garcia had played together at Monday night jam sessions at The Matrix in San Francisco. Wales had also played organ on several tracks of the Grateful Dead album American Beauty. It features a few musicians who later played in Jerry Garcia side projects — John Kahn, Bill Vitt, and Martin Fierro.

The back cover of the album depicts a photograph of Jerry Garcia and Howard Wales smoking on an outdoor sofa.

AllMusic Review by Lindsay Planer (4/5 Stars)
Prior to releasing his first non-Grateful Dead-related solo albums, Jerry Garcia (guitar) teamed up with Howard Wales (keyboards), another Bay Area performer, for the instrumental studio outing Hooteroll? (1971). They had actually been sharing the stage of local clubs -- most notably the Matrix and Keystone Korners -- during Monday night open-jam sessions circa 1968 and 1969. It was these free-form live collaborations that connected the guitarist with future Jerry Garcia Band colleague John Kahn (bass), and the pair maintained a close musical association until Garcia's passing in 1995. The "anything goes" and "no expectations" mentality fuelling those Garcia and Wales gigs likewise translated into the primary motivating force behind this platter.

Joining the two are Curly Cook (rhythm guitar), Bill Vitt (drums), Michael Marinelli (drums), Ken Balzall (trumpet), and Martin Fierro (sax/flute). "Morning in Marin" and the funky "South Side Strut" fuse intricate and advanced jazz progressions with soulful and driving rhythms, recalling Miles Davis' (trumpet) late-'60s work and Tony Williams' (drums) subsequent recordings Emergency! (1969) and Turn It Over (1970).

Garcia brings a quality and pure tonality that he would rarely revisit, either on his own or in the Grateful Dead.

I use the Goldmine Grading System, and play-test all records. I note any differences between vinyl and cover, and make note of any inserts, special sleeves, or potential defects.

MINT (M) - Absolutely perfect in every way. Most often this is a still sealed record, records that have been opened are rarely if ever marked as Mint.

NEAR MINT (NM) - A good description is that it looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. In other words, it?s nearly perfect, with no visible defects.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) - Except for a couple minor things, this could be Near Mint. Most collectors will be happy with a VG+ record, especially if on the high end (VG++). VG+ records may show slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Covers should have only minor wear.

VERY GOOD (VG) - VG records are among the biggest bargains, and for many, will be worth the money. They can lack the original gloss, may have surface noise, and some scratches may be audible, especially in soft passages. But the noise will not overpower the music. VG covers will have signs of handling, and may have minor splits.

GOOD PLUS (G+) - Good+ does not mean bad! The record still plays through without skipping, but it has significant surface noise and groove wear. Cover may have significant ring wear, noticeable writing, or obvious damage.

GOOD (G) - Record may have some skipping, but is otherwise listenable. I generally avoid selling Good (G) rated records unless they are highly collectible or desirable, in order to enjoy until something better comes along. Cover has major wear or seam splits that need repair, or heavy writing like radio station call letters to prevent theft.
