Reel-to-reel: Smashing Pumpkins: Pre-Gish Radio Interview (Master Tape)

Back in 1991 I was working at a college radio station. Smashing Pumpkins were playing a few shows while in the midst of recording Gish, and stopped by the station for an interview. At the time they only had a couple 7-inch singles out so nobody (including me) knew who they were. I wound up interviewing James and D'arcy. I recall James telling me this was the first radio interview he'd done, which is kind of a fun fact. In truth, it was the first interview I'd done too.

All these years later I decided to have a box of old reel-to-reel tapes baked, restored and digitized... and the Smashing Pumpkins interview was one of the tapes. I'm not much of a music collector anymore so I'll let the master go.

What I'll include is:

* The original Ampex reel with the Smashing Pumpkins interview. The running time of the recording is 26:20.

* A CD with a .wav file version of the contents of the reel.

NOTE: This isn't a fabulously done interview conducted by a seasoned professional. I was 25 years old and had zero experience interviewing a band, and James and D'arcy had zero experience being interviewed. But it's an awesome collectable and if you're a Smashing Pumpkins fan looking for a truly one-of-a-kind piece this may be for you. Also, I believe strongly in an artist's right to own their art... so I've reached out to James's management and publicist twice in an attempt to give him the tape if he was interested in having it, but haven't gotten any response... so at this point I don't feel like I'm being a dick by offering it for sale. I'm hoping it will go to a collector who will enjoy and continue to preserve it.
