CHARLIE PARKER
vintage original Liege & Brussels October 1954 concert handbill
Unique, one of a kind, original first printing concert handbill advertising the great CHARLIE "BIRD" PARKER with SARAH VAUGHAN and ILLINOIS JACQUET at the Emulation in Liege and at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels [Belgium] on Sunday, 10th October, 1954, presented by the Hot Club de Belgique in association with British impressario Harold Davsion, who was responsible for the European tour.
The handbill measures exactly 13.9 x 18.0 cm (approx. 5.5" by 7.1" inches) and is beautifully printed on both sides in orange and black inks on medium-thin, uncoated paper stock. These unique Belgium handbills were mailed to memebrs of the Belgian Hot Club as well as used as window cards in nearby theaters, shops and business as a promotional tool. The back of the handbill lists upcoming jazz concerts in various Belgian cities during the Fall of 1954.
Unfortunately Bird had to withdraw from the tour after voluntarily re-committing himself to Bellevue. Both concerts, however, went ahead but with COLEMAN HAWKINS replacing Bird. This auction includes a smaller handbill announcing that Bird has had to cancel and would be replaced by Hawkins. This smaller handbill measures 15.1 x 10.8 cm and is in excellent condition, bright and unmarked.
