Album Notes:
This 2001 European vinyl reissue was manufactured in Germany by Universal M & L. This edition is often identified by the "320" etching in the runout, indicating it is German pressing. However, there is NO EXPLICIT credit for remastering on this release.

Willem Mackkee was a mastering engineer for Universal Music in Germany, and worked on many reissues in the early 2000's. Makkee was known for cutting vinyl directly from analog tapes or from ' safety analog copies' when the original masters weren’t available. Collectors associate the "320" matrix codes with his work, especially from Universal’s Hanover facility (formerly Deutsche Grammophon). Mackkee's practice was to request a replacement if he suspects a tape sent to him for mastering was digitally sourced. It’s doubtful that he was given an original master for these reissues.

Once again, although this Superunknown ’s 2001 reissue does not credit Willem Makkee directly, the “320” etchings in the runout and the German origin strongly point to his involvement. If true, this would make this 2001 reissue a rare example of what many believe to be its highest-quality, analog-sourced pressing to date .

However, regardless of what he had to work from, Makkee’s “320” cut of this album sounds wonderful. His mastered version is considered by audiophile enthusiasts to be the preeminent vinyl copy of 'Superunknown'. And of course, it remains in high demand and is supremely rare.
