Now, here's a recording enterprise of the utmost fascination. Malmo-born Sixten Ehrling was still only in his early 30s when he was invited by the Swedish Metronome label to set down the first ever complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies on disc. The task began in late January 1952 and finished within a calendar year. Right from the dusky outset of the First Symphony, there's a tingling freshness and big-hearted fervour about this music-making. In Ehrling's gifted hands, the first two symphonies especially have a thrilling majesty and cogency about them, while Nos. 3, 5 and 7 all satisfyingly combine doughty purpose with keen observation. The Sixth is, perhaps, marginally less convincing. As for No. 4, Ehrling doesn't stint one bit on the unnerving bleakness of Sibelius's introspective vision, yet at the same time he locates a vulnerability and humanity in this astonishing masterpiece that are profoundly touching. Apparently, the original Metronome mastertapes were in such an unhealthy condition that the Finlandia transfer engineers had to work from archive vinyl pressings instead. Generally speaking, they've done a commendable job, and for experienced Sibelians everywhere this bold mid-price reissue will surely come as something of an ear-opener.--Andrew Achenbach
