Purchased a lonnnnnng long time ago in the East Village at a long-forgotten book store, possibly 1976? It has remained unopened and untouched in my collection until this day, solely purchased decades ago as a compliment to my Velvet Underground collection. Although its age is showing, the spine in unbroken/uncracked, and all pages are intact. Some foxing to the back cover; a few minor marks on the front cover—NO tears or rips! Overall in very very good condition. This is a copy of the book from which the VU gained their name—first edition, 1963, Macfadden books, pulp mass market paperback.
Courtesy of Quora: The Velvet Underground got their name from The Velvet Underground, a quickie nonfiction paperback book about unconventional sex practices in the USA, such as wife-swapping, orgies, and sadomasochism. On the other hand, although Lou Reed was supposedly bisexual and the band did sing about S&M on "Venus in Furs," the meaning of the band's name is not limited to the sexual "underground." According to guitarist Sterling Morrison, "We had a name at last! And it was adopted by us and deemed appropriate by us not because of the S&M theme of the book, but because the word ‘underground’ was suggestive of our involvement with the underground film and art scenes."
