Reel-to-reel: RARE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO - SMS STEREO PRODUCTION TEST REEL TO REEL

Production tapes were produced on different types of tapes to determine which would produce the best response on the most durable tape types. This is not a "master" tape, it is a production tape. That being said, the production tapes were still limited, and very rare. And the best part is that you can actually listen to it!
The master reels in the 60's & 70's were recorded on 1" & 2" masters, and the master reels of this tape would sell for tens of thousands of dollars. The equipment used to record them were mostly limited to studios and were completely out of use by the mid-late 80's. The acetate for the album sold for just under $26,000 several years ago.
What's most amazing about this album is that Warhol & the VU could not even find a label that would record this album. The "content" of the songs were very controversial at the time, and all of the big studios; i.e. Columbia/Atlantic & the like would not even touch it. Finally MGM accpeted for a mere pittance to record it. They spun it off on one of their smaller labels, VERVE, which at the time was mostly used for jazz artists. It was recorded in about 4 days in NYC, and when finally released was a complete failure. It originally sold only 25-30,000 copies and was critically crucified in the media. It was until much, much later that it became a "cult" classic and started to sell.
