Nicki Minaj raises the bar on "The Pinkprint," her long awaited follow up to "Pink Friday Roman Reloaded." Gone are the blips and blats of electronica that filled out tracks like "Starships" on her last album. In their place are much more layered, textured songs with lyrics of more substance. This is a rare album which finds the songs scaled back and stripped down but still catchier; they are better songs with bigger hooks...and what's more, the rap tracks hit harder than Minaj has before. As opposed to the songs being about bling and booty (there are a few exceptions of course), they are songs mostly about heartbreak. Minaj reaches new depths as an artist here, singing MUCH better than she ever has, and rapping with a passion and a purpose. "Bed of Lies" is a standout, featuring the melancholy vocals of the talented Skylar Grey. On "Trini Dem Girls," she pays homage to her roots. "Pills and Potions" is just amazing, revealing a sincerity rarely displayed by a rapper...while singing.
This album now solidifies Minaj as a multi-talented crossover artist who is at the top of her game. This is a major statement for her, and despite the occasional misstep, this album offers something for everyone while staying true to her roots. The passion, the hooks, the beats, and the verses are all here, and delivered as well as organized much better than at any time in her past.
