The Jimi Hendrix Experience : Electric Ladyland A1 / A2 / B2 / B2 Track Record Pressing 1972

This first repress from 1972 plays with exceptional quality with barely any intrusion and has to be one of the finest examples I have ever sold. The clarity, depth and power of the audio is stunning and 'Voodoo Chile' and '1983 (A Merman I Should Be' in particular plays with phenomenal sonic quality. The two stand out tracks you could say and wow do they play well! Across all four sides there are no clicks or pops and like I say the clarity is so impressive. As any Experience connoisseur will know Side B is often problematic due to how it was recorded / produced, there is sometimes a 'muddied' / distorted sound on a couple but the audio here is very impressive actually and 'The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp' is the only track on the album that falls below a Near Mint standard.

The vinyls are in fantastic condition are are easily among the 'cleanest' I have ever seen. In my opinion they have only been very lightly played and have only the bare minimum of spindle wear. Stunning!

The iconic cover has also been so well preserved and remains in superb condition with only minimal wear... and I do mean minimal! I have conservatively graded it as Ex and has clearly not been handled very much. The original inner sleeves (dated 0972 & 1072) are in very good to excellent condition.

This may be the first repress from '72 but it still has the small photos of Mitchell and Redding on the inside of the gatefold.

Visual description The vinyls are in superb condition and still retain an immaculate glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only see a very small number of ultra faint sleeve removal hairlines and there is nothing that stands out. There is obviously no groove wear or bag 'rash' and the Track Record labels are in fantastic condition also with only very minimal spindle wear. Play grading The quiet intro on 'And The Gods Made Love' plays with wonderful clarity with only a couple of barely audible statics. The swirling tape loops passage again plays with genuine quality and with no intrusion whatsoever even on the quiet closing section. This is a Mint- start to this classic album at the very least. '...Electric Ladyland' then plays with stunning quality from the get go. The 'Grandfather' clock intro has no background and the opening vocal section from Hendrix is just as impressive. The low key solo (by his standards!) is perfect and the closing vocal including the long fade out has not so much as a dust tick. A superb Mint version. The intro on 'Cross Town Traffic' is so strong and clear and the opening vocal is equal to that. From then on it plays with great power and clarity and there is nothing that stops me from grading it as Mint such is the quality of the audio. Incredible power and depth and no distortion either. The segue into the classic 'Voodoo Chile' has no background and the intro is so clean and precise also. It's so quiet of course and yet there is literally no background. The first 'vocal' is flawless and there is just one mega light tick soon after, hardly worth a mention really. The instrumental bridge is perfect and the first actual verse is as good as new with no interference. It plays with that deep rich sound that you only find on the first / early Track pressings and the clarity of sound is just STUNNING, a couple of barely audible statics that is all. The first 'chorus' plays with impeccable power and it continues to play with a sonic quality that is second to none. The playback is so clear and 'fresh' sounding and it's so obvious this vinyl has only been lightly played. The first lengthy instrumental has the wow factor! Hendrix's work combined with Winwood's Hammond organ plays with sensational quality and you just have to turn up the volume during this section! The playback is fantastic and again there is zero distortion. Mitchell's percussion and Redding's deep bass add so much to the overall sonic 'landscape' and especially on a clean vinyl such as this. The next vocal section has no background and the following instrumental is on the same level. It incorporates Mitchell's solo section and again you cannot fault the quality of the audio, you can hear each subtle nuance in the music. As it builds the playback is phenomenal, I am running out of superlatives already! The remainder is of the same high end standard and the powerful end section is exactly so that - so powerful and with no distortion, it just could not play any better. The crescendo finale is superb! The final 'audience' section is again so clean with only a handful of mega quiet statics. I have to say this is the most 'complete' version I have heard of this all time classic in a long long time and Mint- is 100% deserved. Arguably the minus should not even be there! -

The acoustic intro on 'Little Miss Strange' plays perfectly as does Hendrix's piece. Redding's opening vocal is 'as new' and thereafter it plays with sublime clarity and depth and it without doubt the cleanest version I have ever listened to. The mid instrumental has no intrusion and the final vocal section is just as strong. A touch of distortion on the closing instrumental but so so minimal and totally non-intrusive. Mint-

'Long Hot Summer Night' has a couple of minor statics on the intro and the opening vocal has no background at all. From then on it plays so clearly with no ticks, clicks or pops. A couple of statics no more and there is nothing to detract from the overall sound. I will say Near Mint but that could be considered a little harsh!

The intro on 'Come On' has no interference and the opening vocal section is just as strong. Once again it's the clarity of sound that is the stand out feature. Hendrix's mid solo plays clean and powerful with Redding's deep bass providing the perfect accompaniment. The rest of the track has no intrusion and Mint- is fair.

The percussive intro on 'Gipsy Eyes' is flawless and the opening vocal is equal to that. It continues in much the same way with zero intrusion on the audio. It is perhaps not as 'clear' as some other tracks but I am convinced that is due to how it was recorded / produced, it's nothing to do with the vinyl. In a way it does not deserve to be downgraded but I will say Near Mint as a precaution.

The wah wah intro on 'The Burning Of The Midnight Lamp' is superb and it then plays with powerful clean audio from that point on. There is a little inner groove distortion on the sound / vocal but that is a common feature on this classic and again it's more down to the production etc. The instrumental sections actually play with real quality so overall I will say Ex+ and I defy anyone to say they have a Mint version of this track on this pressing. I've set myself up there!

The entire intro on 'Rainy Day, Dream Away' plays with stunning precision, I cannot overstate how immaculate the audio is. The vocal section keeps up the standard and through to the very end it plays with sublime clarity and depth. A Mint version in my opinion.

The intro on '1983 (A Merman I Should Be)' is so close to perfect with just one light static at the start and the opening vocal has no background at all. The following instrumental is faultless and the next vocal again demonstrates how well this album has been looked after, stunning clarity and definition. The accompanying music to Hendrix's vocal is just so strong and clear, the playback is fantastic! The same applies to the quieter vocal passage and then the 'psychedelic' section is... exceptional! This is one section you want to play with an impressive clarity of sound and wow do we have it here! There is not even a single dust tick let alone anything more and the warmth and depth of the audio is up there with the best I have ever heard. As the volume increases into Mitchell's section the playback is 'as new' as per the preceding audio! This truly is audio of the highest calibre with every aspect of The Experience working in perfect harmony with literally no background. Redding's bass section is so clean and the final powerful section is STUNNING! The end vocal has no background and neither does the final instrumental. I have no hesitation in grading this classic as Mint- such is the sonic quality. The minus is only there due to that one static at the start but 99.9% unequivocally plays as Mint for sure!

The brief 'Moon Turn The Tides...' ends the side with stunning clarity and has just one very light tick towards the end. There is no underlying static though which is a rarity for this track. A Mint- conclusion to this superb side.

The intro on 'Still Raining, Still Dreaming' always plays a little too quietly for my liking but it nonetheless plays very clearly with no intrusion. Hendrix's first vocal is faultless and the following instrumental is superb. So deep and strong and definitely louder, this is no doubt the affect they were after. It continues to play with sublime quality - incredible work from Hendrix here as per usual (!) and the sonic quality is out of this world! The audio is crystal clear and there is no distortion on the top end, it could not play any better. Not one single negative and it is Mint from start to finish. You could not wish for a more dynamic version.

A strong intro on 'House Burning Down' although perhaps not quite as clear as the previous track. A minor issue. The first vocal section is stunning and it proceeds in much the same way. There is no distortion but the overall clarity of sound isn't as impressive here but again that's probably more due to how it was recorded etc. Near Mint

The intro on 'All Along The Watchtower' plays with such depth and power and the opening vocal is just as strong. On a well looked after EL this classic always plays with impeccable sonic quality and I have no complaints. Every vocal and instrumental section is so clean and dynamic and there is only one brief section towards the end that seems a little quieter than it should be, maybe it's just me! I'll say Near Mint

'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)' is STUNNING from the very first note. The quiet intro is perfect and as the volume ramps up the audio is so powerful and clean. The opening vocal has no intrusion and from then on there is so much to like! The volume dips out a little during the mid instrumental but the remainder plays with phenomenal power and no interference. Stunning work from Hendrix - there is no inner groove distortion and overall Near Mint is a fair assessment of the audio.

The Gatefold & Inner Sleeves

The laminated cover is for once in excellent condition with only minimal shelf wear. The edges and wide spine are in great shape and only the corners have a small amount of wear / rubbing. The opening edges are very clean with very little handling wear and the front cover is in lovely condition without any marking. Rarely there are no laminate marking which tends to suggest it has not been handled very much and the back cover is almost as good. It just has one crease line near the bottom right corner and a couple of tiny ones next to the bottom edge. The inside of the gatefold is stunning and it's so rare to find the inner spine as 'clean' as this. It has barely any laminate wear and both panels are so clean without any marking or creasing. A superb example overall and one of the best early covers I have ever seen.

The poly-lined Plastic Bags... inners have no side splits and only a little age related fading around the edges. One of them however does have a tear on the central aperture. Aside from that they have just some minor creasing.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!
