Basic Information

This is a listing for a second-hand George Harrison The Apple Years: 1968-1975 box set, released in 2014 by Apple Records.

All parts of this box set are in excellent "near mint" condition. The cellophane (and sticker on-top of it) have been removed, but all parts of the actual box set have barely been used or handled.

The box set is now discontinued and is a rare and collectible item. It is available fleetingly on Ebay.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk, usually at high prices.

The item is comprised of the following components:
  • High quality box. (Note: when looking at the "opening lid", do not mistake the photograph image of Harrison's hair on the black background, to the right of his face, as a "scuff". That scuff-like image is apparent on all pictures you see online of this box! It is an optical illusion and is definately an image of Harrison's hair and is not a scuff!)
  • 6 Albums in cardboard sleeves (see below for the exact albums).
  • 1 DVD with an integrated 48-page booklet.
The record company (Apple Records) catalogue number is 0602537913879.

The dimensions of the box set are as follows: Width 14.2cm, Length 15.2cm and Height 11.3cm.

About the Content

The Apple Years: 1968-75 is a collection of all of George Harrison's studio albums that were originally issued on the Beatles' Apple record label.

The six albums are:
  • Wonderwall Music (1968)
  • Electronic Sound (1969)
  • All Things Must Pass (1970; 2 CDs)
  • Living in the Material World (1973)
  • Dark Horse (1974)
  • Extra Texture (Read All About It) (1975)
The final disc is a DVD containing, first and foremost, a feature titled "The Apple Years". It also contains promotional films from some of his previous posthumous reissues, such as The Concert for Bangladesh, as well as other videos (see the DVD tracks in the "Tracklistings" section below for full details of the DVD content). While an interesting deviation from the music for the avid fan, it is the music that is the main draw of the box set.

All the albums have been digitally remastered -- from the original analogue masters -- by Dhani Harrison (Harrison's son) and Paul Hicks (who worked on the acclaimed 2009 Beatles remasters). Moreover, this 2014 box set marks the first time that the Dark Horse and Extra Texture albums have been remastered since 1992. All albums are packaged in high-quality card packs. Also, all albums -- apart from All Things Must Pass and Living In The Material World -- contain newly written notes by Kevin Howlett.

AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes The Apple Years as "a handsomely produced, impeccably remastered box set" with sound that is "rich, deep, and alluring". He writes that All Things Must Pass is "rightly regarded as the masterpiece", while highlighting Wonderwall Music as "a bit of an unacknowledged gem, a frequently intriguing psychedelic relic that represents one of the first serious forays into world music by a Western musician". Erlewine concludes of the six albums: "It's hard to deny the ups and downs to be found here, but combined they paint a picture of Harrison's complexities and contradictions, and the music has never sounded better – and each album has never looked better – than it does here."
