1966 Johnny Mathis Fillmore-Era Boxing Style Concert Poster

A San Francisco native, Mathis was an exceptional track & field athlete that had received an athletic scholarship as well an invitation to a try-out for the U.S. Olympic team. Instead, he followed his singing career, which resulted in one of the most acclaimed singers of the 20th century. Mathis has released over 200 singles and has had 71 songs charted around the world. He’s had five of his albums on the Billboard charts simultaneously, while his 1958 Johnny’s Greatest Hits spent 491 consecutive weeks on the Billboard top 100 albums chart. By this November 20th, 1966 show at the Memorial Hall in Dayton, Ohio, the 31-year old singer had already released over 25 albums. To say he was prolific is an understatement.

This original poster, measuring 13 1/2" x 21”, is on thick cardboard similar to other boxing style posters. Although it shows some wear and tear, the posters image, lettering, and color are still very nice. Each corner has small staple holes, along with soft corners and handling. The bottom two corners have tape residue on them. There are also larger visible creases to the right of Mathis’ right cheek and over his right shoulder. The back of the poster also has a 5 1/2" piece of green tape at the top. Although it shows some handling, the poster is a great portrait of the standards singer at a time when rock ‘n’ roll was taking over.
