Vinyl: JONI MITCHELL Don Juan's Reckless Daughter UNRELEASED STUDIO ACETATES 1977 Hear
Here is a set of studio acetates from the recording sessions of Joni Mitchell's 1977 album Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. These were owned by the late A&M Studios staff engineer Steve Katz, who worked on the album alongside Joni's longtime collaborator Henry Lewy. The set includes nine tracks on three discs, three of which are unreleased:
- An alternate take of "Otis and Marlena" that's just Joni and her guitar. It's more reminiscent of something from Blue than the full band version on the album. Hear a clip of it at this link: /ebay_audio/joni1.mp3
- A distinctly stripped down, alternate take of the title track, likely recorded before Jaco Pistorius' involvement in the session. Hear a clip of it at this link: /ebay_audio/joni2.mp3
- A mostly acoustic alternate take of the lead track, "Overture-Cotton Avenue." Joni's vocal phrasing is different, there are far fewer overdubs, and once again, Jaco is absent. Hear a clip of it at this link: /ebay_audio/joni3.mp3
The other six of the nine tracks comprise sides 1 and 4 of the issued double album. These were probably mastering reference tracks, but there may be subtle differences in the mix. All three discs are in VG+ or better condition with a few light sleeve marks visible under bright light. Playback is excellent throughout.
