Flyer/Handbill: Otis Redding 1967 U.K. Concert Handbill w/Five Other Stax Records Hitmakers
A really fun British concert-advertising handbill from 1967 for the mighty Otis Redding appearing in Manchester, England just nine months before he tragically passed away. 1967 was the year Otis became a breakout mainstream pop-music star by tearing it up at the Monterey Pop Festival in California’s Bay Area, forever memorialized by the great movie made of the festival.
Backing up Otis are a set of FIVE fantastic soul-music legends of the ’60s themselves, consisting of Arthur Conley (“Sweet Soul Music”), Sam and Dave (“Hold On, I’m Comin’”), Eddie Floyd (“Knock on Wood”), The Mar-Keys (“Soul Finger”) and the incredible Booker T. and the MG’s (“Green Onions” and many others).
This genuine, original four-color flyer (Day-Glo pink, yellow, black and white) measures 5 ¾ by 12 inches in size and is not quite in mint condition, although the color area is – there is virtually not a flaw in the pink and yellow boxes. Otherwise, it does have some light surface creasing at the top, in the white area only, and a ‘tape lift’ down in the lower-right hand corner which took a couple of letters and dots with it. Please see my pictures.
The booking form down at the bottom, common with English handbills of the day, remains completely unused and unmarked.
It is guaranteed for life to be completely original and authentic, printed in the winter of 1966-67, but of course no bootleggers are going to bother with Day-Glo colors on such a small scale… only a big English concert promoter would bother with that expense. STARTING THIS LISTING AT $99.99, no reserve, letting the marketplace (you) determine its value. I’ve been an eBay member since the late 1990’s and have never received so much as a single "neutral" feedback in 20 years, let alone a negative one. Because I’m honest, I don’t play games and I work hard at customer service. As for my pricing, I just prefer to let market forces push any item to what its value is this week, and not engage in wishful thinking; I shoot for 100% sell-through. So yes, sometimes you get a bargain, and other times I do really well. It’s all in the thrill ride that is eBay, and I’m a clean player. Also, I DO NOT CLOSE AUCTIONS EARLY, so please don’t ask.
As for my credibility, my name is Pete Howard and I've had something on display in a music museum for most of the last 25 years, starting in the fall of 1995 when the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened in Cleveland with a dozen of my items on display, including three Beatles Liverpool concert posters. Museums in New York, Los Angeles and Paris have also displayed my artifacts. In addition, I have over 600 YouTube videos up where I discuss rare and collectible concert memorabilia. I also published ICE magazine for compact disc collectors from 1987-2006, and was a Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone magazine from 1988-1995.
Soul-music and R&B legends like Otis Redding are right there in stature with Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Doors, the Grateful Dead and other Fillmore-era / Bill Graham-promoted musicians that not only produced great music but changed pop culture with their enormous impact on society. Thus, their concert memorabilia has a bright future when it comes to appreciating in value over time.
Please let me know if you have any rare CONCERT POSTERS, HANDBILLS or TICKETS available from the early 1970s back to the 1930s. I love to collect them and pay the very BEST prices in the hobby, whether they’re rock & roll, jazz, blues, psychedelic, big band, country or whatever… I love it all. Thanks for stopping by, and have a great day!
