Prince The Black Album Cassette - Only Copy Known to Exist (Warner Bros. WB-25677, 1987). 1987 original advance promo cassette of Prince's legendary withdrawn album. Please note - this is not the 1994 reissue (WB 45793), but a genuine Warner Bros. promo tape of the original 1987 issue. The Black Album was pulled from sale shortly before its release date by Prince himself. He finally decided to release it seven years later. In 1987, the albums were manufactured in five different configurations in the U.S by WB Records: 1) Vinyl LP; 2) 45 rpm promo vinyl 2 LP; 3) CD with longbox; 4) Cassette Tape; and 5) Promo Cassette Tape. All but a handful of copies of these were destroyed, as ordered by Prince. A few copies were retained by WB Records executives and subsequently these have changed hands for high prices. Opened copies of the CD have sold for $3000 or more, while the vinyl issues have sold recently for $10,000 to $15,000 each. We are not aware of a sale of either version of the cassette tape (commercial issue or promo). There may be only a couple copies of each in existence. This tape, which is in beautiful near mint condition, has "For Promotional Use Only" and "Tape Duplication by WEA Manufacturing Inc. (717) 383-2471" printed on the insert J-card. The album simply has "Prince" on the insert, while the tape labels list only "The Black Album" Guaranteed 100% authentic, as the item was acquired from an ex--WB executive. Includes Letter of Authenticity from Record Mecca's Jeff Gold, who was executive VP and GM of WB Records and worked closely with Prince for his releases on the label. Condition: Near Mint. LOA from Record Mecca. HID04901242017
