Original, promotional poster celebrating the appointment of rock superstar Elton John as the chairman of Watford Football Club, taken from the original painting from a 1976 ,A painting by Terry Challis published by the Watford Observer in 1977. A frankly surreal design, which depicts Elton John riding a hornet (the Club’s emblem) and pointing the way forward for the (then) beleaguered team. In a strongly allegorical image, the ruins of past dynasties at Watford are represented against a bright potential future, which includes a new stadium and the ultimate ambition of competing on equal terms with the most successful team of the era, Liverpool (shown here a Liver Bird on raised ground). This actual poster was previously displayed in the Watford FC dressing room, and has consequential signs of age.
Provenance This actual poster was previously displayed in the Watford FC dressing room and was acquired by a former employee of the club.
Condition of the poster
The poster has edge wear all round, a small part taken out of the top left hand corner
as from the pictures you see, it has been taped on the back where there was a tear in the past. looks fine from the front
It's never been folded
it also had Blu tack on the back Some of it has been taken off, the other small bits of it has gone hard ,so left on ,the rest has stained it in places
Overall it is in Pretty good Condition considering where it was Hung and without it being framed for protection and all those players admiring it
it has been up in the Watford football Club Dressing room since 1977 until about a few years back
obtained by a former employee of the Football Club
