COMPACT CASSETTE AUDIO TAPE

We exercise strict quality control with cassette tapes, as with everything we sell, and strive to only offer the best quality. To do this, we play them fully (unless factory sealed) and try to give a guide based on this. We rate them on the plastic case, the cassette shell itself, the paper insert or slick, if they are noise reduction encoded and the general sound quality. There is a guide to our grading at the end of the listing. Our intention is to harshly grade what we offer, with a view that this should satisfy all. We also try to take clear pictures of the actual items for sale, so any obvious defects are normally viewable.

As with all analogue audio formats, care must be taken to ensure your equipment is maintained. We will not be responsible for any tape snapped, caught or damaged by your equipment. We will be pleased to help with any advice you may like regarding equipment maintainance or what you should do.

POSTAGE Postage on these items is calculated by weight. Due to weight variations on individual tapes, its difficult to give an accurate postage across the board. We only charge the Australia Post costs. Some will post within the 250g weight which is $4.35 as at the time of this listing. The 500g rate is $5.60. Over 500g is postcode sensitive. As always, I'm happy to combine postage on multiple items. On items of 501g to 3 kg, a 3 kg pre-paid express satchel is suggested and at the time of this listing is $11.30. Postage costs will be accurately calculated at sale end. These costs are for Australia only.

CASE (PLASTIC OR JEWEL CASE THE TAPE IS SUPPLIED IN)

• As new is what it sounds- like new condition
• Very good means there are no cracks, maybe some minor scuffs.
• Good means maybe a minor crack, but hinges intact
• Passable means the case might be fairly scratched or cracked
• Below this we simply would not offer for sale.

SHELL (THE CASE THE TAPE IS ACTUALLY CONTAINED IN)

• As New is what it sounds- like new condition
• Very Good means possibly minor signs of use or scratches. If it has a paper label it may have minor bubbling
• Good means maybe some scratches. If it has a paper label some wear but the label is all present
• Passable means it may look worn, or a bit of the label may be missing
• Below this we simply would not offer for sale

SLICK (PAPER INSERT OR ARTWORK)

• As new is what it sounds- like new condition
• Very good means the label may have some very minor scuffs and or creases
• Good means all intact with some heavier creases
• Passable means maybe a minor tear, minor water damage creating a ripple (not sticking together)
• Below this we simply would not offer for sale

SOUND (SOUND QUALITY ON PLAYBACK)

• Excellent means the sound quality is clear with no obvious drop outs, almost digital quality
• Very Good means the sound is clear, maybe a minor drop out not greatly noticeable but present
• Good means some use evident with the occasional drop out and or not as clear as it might be. Sometimes this is also due to limitations of the original recording or master tape that the cassette tape has been made from.
• Passable means listenable but not desirable. Would only offer this if it is an ultra rare tape and at the appropriate price.

NR (FOR NOISE REDUCTION)

There are a number of different noise reduction formats in use on mass produced pre-recorded cassette tapes, the most common being Dolby B. With Dolby B, if your machine doesn't offer a noise reduction system, you can simply reduce the treble control without compromising the sound of the recording on the tape. Occasionally we will offer specialty tapes mastered using different noise reduction systems. It will be necessary to make sure you have compatible equipment, since you need the decoders to allow faithful reproduction of the sound. Some of these formats might be DBX, CX, High-Com. These are not common however.

GENERAL COMMENT

If you are wanting sound perfection, pre-recorded or mass produced compact cassettes, although quite amazing is probably not the format of choice. Some tapes can be close to CD quality, but not something to be expected on the average cassette tape. Our ratings of sound quality are those based on the realistic expectations of performance of a well recorded mass produced tape.
