Ironie, Zynismus und ein tiefschwarzer Humor waren das Markenzeichen des amerikanischen Kultstars Warren Zevon. Der Sohn ukrainischer Einwanderer blieb dem größeren Publikum als One-Hit-Wonder in Erinnerung, sein 1976er "Werewolves Of London" vom Album "Excitable Boy" zog weltweit in die Charts ein und der Titel wird noch heute gern rund um Halloween von US-Radiostationen gespielt. Doch auch wenn sich Zevons übrige Veröffentlichungen beim Publikum weniger gut verkauften, war er ein geschätzter Kollege und Songwriter und niemand geringerer als Linda Ronstadt coverte seine Songs auf zwei ihrer erfolgreichsten Alben.
Auch der Filmemacher Martin Scorsese ehrte Zevon, indem er 1986 "Werewolves Of London" für den Soundtrack von "Die Farbe des Geldes" nutzte. Titel wie "Excitable Boy" und "Lawyers, Guns und Money" laufen noch heute auf den Radiostationen. Das Remastering für Audio Fidelity übernahm Steve Hoffman in den Studios von Marsh Mastering. Die Hybrid-SACD erscheint in limitierter Auflage mit fortlaufender Seriennummer.

2003 starb Warren William Zevon aus Chicago, mit 56. Er, der seine größten Hits Ende der 70er gehabt hatte ("Werewolves of London"), hätte sicher gern ein Wörtchen mitgeredet bei den Remasters seiner klassischen Alben, zumal einige davon noch nicht auf CD vorlagen. Zum Beispiel das grandiose Livealbum "Stand in the Fire" (1981) oder das nur streckenweise überzeugende, weil bereits vom 80er-Plastiksound infizierte Studioalbum "The Envoy" (1982), dessen dramatisch dahinstapfendes und in seiner Beschwörung der Nahostkrise zeitloses Titelstück ihm gleichwohl glorios geriet. Alle drei Alben erhielten eine Abmischung, die dem Zevon-Sound entgegenkommt; Bässe und Drums müssen nämlich schmatzen, und das taten sie nie genug. An Bonustracks wurde nicht gespart, jedes Album erhielt vier, wenngleich ihr Mehrwert nicht immer sehr groß ist. Macht nichts, Hauptsache Neues von Warren - der auch mal röhrend "Wild Thing" coverte, was er uns damals lieber vorenthielt. Am sinnigsten sind die Ergänzungen übrigens beim Livealbum, hier nähern wir uns schlicht der Komplettfassung des Konzertes, wenngleich Zevon sicher noch mehr Songs spielte als nur 14. "Excitable Boy"(1978) bildet den Höhepunkt des ersten Remasterschubs. Es ist das glühende Zentrum seines Schaffens - und angesichts der Alternativversion von "Werewolves ...", wo seine Stimme fast verschütt' geht unterm Instrumentarium, wissen wir den genialen Originalmix umso mehr zu schätzen. Warren Zevon's Excitable Boy, includes the hit "Werewolves of London" and it's the record that brought Zevon to commercial attention and remains the best-selling album of his career. The album announced he was one of the most striking talents to emerge from the Los Angeles soft rock singer/songwriter community.
With this 1978 LP, Warren Zevon stepped forward as something of the dark prince of California. Jackson Browne once called Zevon "the first and foremost proponent of song noir." Excitable Boy threw in a mix of werewolves, mercenaries, drug abusers and paranoid spoiled brats, yet while frequently offering exceptional tenderness and insight. It was easy to see why Jackson Browne was his mentor and Linda Ronstadt his patron angel.
The personal involved ensured that this collection would stand the test of time. All involved were arguably at their creative peak, from the production of Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel, to the stella group of musicians and back up singers...Linda Ronstadt, Jennifer Warnes, Karla Bonoff, Russell Kunkel, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Jeff Porcaro, Rick Marotta...it would be easier to name those in Los Angeles who aren't on the recording.

Warren Zevon's self-titled 1976 album announced he was one of the most striking talents to emerge from the Los Angeles soft rock singer/songwriter community, and Linda Ronstadt (a shrewd judge of talent if a sometimes questionable interpreter) recorded three of its songs on two of her biggest-selling albums, which doubtlessly earned Zevon bigger royalty checks than the album itself ever did. But if Warren Zevon was an impressive calling card, the follow-up, Excitable Boy, was an actual hit, scoring one major hit single, "Werewolves of London," and a trio of turntable hits ("Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner," "Lawyers, Guns and Money," and the title track). But while Excitable Boy won Zevon the larger audience his music certainly deserved, the truth is it was a markedly inferior album; while it had all the bile of Warren Zevon, and significantly raised Zevon's dark-humor factor, it was often obvious where his previous album had been subtle, and while all 11 tracks on Warren Zevon were strong and compelling, two of the nine tunes on Excitable Boy -- "Johnny Strike Up the Band" and "Nighttime in the Switching Yard" -- sound like they're just taking up space. Musically, most of Excitable Boy is stuck in a polished but unexceptional FM pop groove, and only "Veracruz" hints at the artful intelligence of Warren Zevon's finest moments. It's hard to say if Zevon was feeling uninspired or just dumbing himself down when he made Excitable Boy, but while it made him famous, it lacks the smarts and substance of his best work.
