I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection these past few weeks and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 40 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.

This is an Original Mono copy of the very rare, hard to find, early Sonny Rollins release "Sonny Rollins Quartet / Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet" on the Prestige label.

I've had this in my collection for many years now, stumbling across it early one morning at a Philly Flea Market.

This is a rare album to find, but this copy is the even rarer early 'Misprint' cover which has the catalog number "7020" printed boldly in the top left corner. It is actually Prestige 7029, which is correct on the label. Later pressings corrected this mistake.

This is an early, original, mono, 'Deep Groove', First Pressing, with the Yellow "Fireworks" prestige label and the '446 W. 50th ST., N.Y.C.' address at the top. I've always loved this striking bold label.

One side of the record is labelled as "Sonny Rollins with The Modern Jazz Quartet" and the other side is labelled as "Sonny Rollins Quartet"

👀 👀 RARE ORIGINAL 'SONNY ROLLINS QUARTET' ON DEEP GROOVE PRESTIGE LABEL 👀 👀

~
This album was released in 1956 on the Prestige label.

It's an original Mono 'Deep Groove' First Pressing of the album, but it's technically a re-issue or compilation of earlier Sonny Rollins 7-inch and 10-inch Prestige recordings from 1951 and 1953.
The music included here are some of Sonny Rollins' earliest sessions as a bandleader and earliest sessions for the Prestige label.

~
This 1956 LP compiles the following sessions:

There are 8 tracks by 'The Sonny Rollins Quartet', which featured Art Blakey on drums, Kenny Drew on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Sonny's great tenor saxophone. This Quartet was one of Sonny Rollins' earliest groups and many Jazz fans, myself included, feel it was one of his best. The musicianship and interplay is just fantastic.

These 8 tunes were recorded December 17, 1951, and originally released in 1952 on the Prestige 10-inch LP "Sonny Rollins Quartet" (PRLP 137). That entire LP is included on this 1956 Compilation.

There are 4 tracks performed by Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet, which featured John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on Vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums.

These sessions were recorded on October 7, 1953 and originally released on a 7-inch 45-RPM EP titled "Sonny Rollins With Modern Jazz Quartet" released on the Prestige label (PREP 1337). That complete EP is also included on this LP.

The last track on the album, 'I Know' was recorded with a slightly different Quartet featuring Newk's Tenor, Roy Haynes on drums, Percy Heath on bass, and Miles Davis on piano.

Recorded on January 17, 1951, This song was recorded during a Miles Davis session, but Miles lays back, playing solid chord changes on piano, letting the young Sonny take the lead with his first-ever quartet.

This session was Miles Davis' first recording session for Prestige and produced by Bob Weinstock. Weinstock was against using the young, relatively unknown Rollins on the session, but Miles knew great talent when he heard it and insisted on having Rollins in his group.

Newk's playing on this song is just amazing. It's basically one long sax solo, with Sonny sailing and bouncing all over the place. Just perfect. I can really appreciate what Miles heard in this young tenor player. My favorite piece on this album.

~
There are 5 different Sonny Rollins original compositions on this album. They are all fantastic and demonstrate his great skill.

The Rollins originals include "The Stopper," "No Moe," "Scoops," "Newk's Fadeaway," and "Mambo Bounce."

Sonny is one of my favorite tenor players and in these early sessions he's already developing his own feel and style. The music is playful and energetic, it just bops, weaves, and swings.

The quartet is tight, cohesive and swinging in a classic Hard Bop style.

'Mambo Bounce' was recorded at the same session as the other Quartet tunes, but was originally released on the Prestige 10-inch album "Mambo Jazz" (PRLP 135). This compilation album puts it back with the other tracks from that same session where it belongs.

"Scoops," another Rollins original composition, really shows off Blakey's hardcore drumming and his perfect interjections and punctuation.

"Shadrack" shows the Quartet's modern hard bop take on an old classic, made popular by Louis Armstrong. It features some of Newk's trademark style, which would become more developed on his later albums.

~
The 4 tracks with the Modern Jazz Quartet, originally recorded in 1953, are fantastic. MJQ's more laid back style seems like it wouldn't work with Newk's blazing bold tenor, but they sound great together.

The mellow sound of Lewis' piano, Milt's Vibes and Sonny's smooth, brash, yet melodic, Tenor playing blends perfectly on the slower ballads.

On the more uptempo numbers, Milt Jackson and Sonny really connect, trading off short bursts of Vibes and Sax that really play well against each other.

They do two Rollins originals. "The Stopper" is a funky Rollins original with a little more grit and edge than the MJQ is known for. "No Moe" is the best of the bunch. Newk's playing is great. He already sounds assured and confident.

The recording quality of the MJQ session isn't as crystal clear as the Quartet sessions on this record, and the sound level and dynamics are slightly 'flat', but still very enjoyable, especially considering this was a 1953 recording session.

The Quartet session tunes just jump out of the speakers. Newk's Tenor is crystal clear and up front. Kenny Drew's piano chords and solos are flowing and fantastic. On several tracks, Art Blakey's powerful dynamic drumming is just amazing. This music was recorded just before Blakey would hook up with Horace Silver in New York and form the Jazz Messengers, but his dynamic drumming style is already in place.

~
These recordings represent Rollins' first sessions as a leader, and it's astonishing how fully formed his style was, even early on in his career. This is superior jazz played by some of the periods master musicians.

This album was mastered and cut to lacquers by the great Rudy Van Gelder. His initials are etched clearly in the Deadwax.

AllMusic calls this album a "fresh and vibrant baker's dozen of selections... a vital component in any jazz enthusiast's collection."

CONDITION:
I tried to show good hi-resolution photos of the cover, labels and vinyl in my pictures.

Right up front let me point out that there is a scratch over the first track on the 'Quartet' side and it does skip. It's not jarring, but it does skip. I have no way to clean this LP other than gently wiping it down with a soft cloth. My meager cleaning did improve the skip and overall sound, but it still skips. Just wanted to make sure that's noted up front.

There are several hairlines and smudges on both sides of the album, but I played it several times thru this morning and, other that track one, it plays thru decently. There are some "pops and clicks" but no other significant issues.

I tried to show the scratch and other views of the vinyl in my pictures. The bulk of the vinyl looks ok, but it does have the one scratch.

This album really needs a good deep cleaning. I had to clean my stylus after playing each side this morning, even after wiping the vinyl down well. The record is basically still exactly how I found it 30+ years ago and I'm sure it would sound much better with some detailed cleaning. I have an OJC copy of this album and have never really played this original copy. I just kept it for the amazing cover art. It's been poly-lined sleeved and stored properly for years.

The Labels are just fantastic. Clean and bright with very clean, sharp spindle holes. This is on the yellow 'fireworks' Prestige labels with the '446 W. 50th ST., N.Y.C.' address. No marks or writing and very nice.

The Matrix has the simple Prestige first pressing identifiers; PRLP-7029 and Rudy's initials boldly inscribed on both sides. I included pictures.

The Jacket is the main reason I kept this album all these years. It's the cleanest, brightest, coolest looking copy of this album I've ever seen in 45 years of collecting.
My OJC pressing has the same basic cover, but in much different, softer shades of orange.

This one is clean, bright, square, sharp and just pops.

As mentioned, this is the Misprint with the bold '7020' catalog number, instead of the proper 7029.

Overall it looks terrific but there are several minor 'faults'.

It does have some minor cover wear and some 'loss of gloss' from shelving, but still looks great. Bold and bright.

There is a small short seam split in one corner, bottom right, of the opening side. The upper opening corner is fine and the rest of the seams and spine are straight and tight. I showed a picture of the 'split' in my photos.

Some of the paper fold-over 'edging' on the back cover, right middle, has pulled away in one small area. Not a big deal, and can probably be 'fixed', but I didn't want to mess with it. Just thought it should be pointed out.

On the front of the jacket, in the upper right, just to the left of the 's' in Sonny, there is a very faint date or initials written in what looks like light blue ink. It's barely noticeable, and might be removed with lighter fluid or alcohol, but again, I didn't want to mess with it. It's barely noticeable, but should be noted. I never noticed it before taking photos today.

The back cover is great. Clean, white and bright. These all-white covers are notorious for showing dirt, scuffs and ringwear, but No ringwear front or back, unusual for 1950s albums. No tanning, foxing, dirt or writing, but it does have it's original price sticker in the upper right. $2.79! What a bargain! I think it's cool and adds authenticity, but others may not feel the same. Another job for the lighter fluid, but I'll let the winning bidder deal with that.

Other than that, a beautiful clean, original, 'misprint' cover. I'm starting this auction with a low opening bid as I thought somebody out there could use an upgrade cover if nothing else.

Don't get me wrong, the vinyl isn't all that bad. It plays thru and sounds great, except for the annoying 'skip' on track 1, and some 'pops & clicks'.

Overall an "acceptable" OG copy of this rare 1956 Sonny Rollins record. This one just doesn't come up for sale that often. Originals are nearly impossible to find. Great Sonny Rollins music and a rare record to find if you're a Rollins or Miles Davis completist.

It's worth my low opening bid just for the great 50's artwork and bright bold colors of the cover alone. I'm sure there's someone out there that needs an upgraded cover for their copy.

Add this fantastic classic Sonny Rollins Hard Bop Jazz album to your collection today.
