1940’s Cafe Zanzibar Program Postcard

This is program for the show where Nat King Cole and Marie Ellington first met and fell in love

This program is a who’s who of groundbreaking black performers

You have

Prince Charming of Tap Bunny Briggs

Rochester from The Jack Benny Program -the first African American to have a regular role on a nationwide radio program

Comedy Team Howell And Bowser

Boogie Woogie piano legend Maurice Rocco whose standing and dancing while playing piano clearly influenced Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis

Pee Wee Marquette

Cotton Club staple Claude Hopkins and his orchestra

This is the program for a "Zanzabarian Nights" show at the legendary Café Zanzibar, the successor to the Cotton Club.

Finding one of these programs is almost impossible and the ones you do see tend to be in museum collections like the one in the Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

The program was also designed to be mailable to a friend as a postcard promotional item.

The program has great risqué imagery.

An interesting historical note. It is commonly said that Marie and Nat fell in love while performing at this club, in 1947.

However

the club opened in 1943 and on the back of this program it references the club only being open for two years. This means that this might be proof that Nat and Marie met earlier that has been historically thought

Please review photos provided for final word on condition.

The programs I sell are between 30-150 years old. They will have signs of wear. Please carefully examine photos.

I do my best to catalog any flaws I find in the description of the item.

I do not accept order cancellations for any reason other than I have not shipped the item in the time I promised

Your purchase helps me continue to fund my artistic work as a photographer in Hollywood California. It also helps me to feed my increasingly finicky cat who now only wants the most expensive cat food
