Musketeer Gripweed and The Third Troop – How I Won The War / Aftermath
1967 7" UK United Artists UP 1196 EX

Really impossible to find 1967 7" from one of John Lennon's many aliases Musketeer Gripweed And The Third Troop, here with How I Won The War c/w Aftermath (United Artists UK stock copy UP 1196).

How I Won The War was a Richard Lester film starring Michael Crawford and John Lennon, with other notable actors including Michael Hordern and Roy Kinnear. A cynical satire on the futility of war, the film was given a lukewarm reception by the critics, and this single released from it failed to chart in the UK and was not released in the US.

The instrumental song was written by Ken Thorne and uses snippets from the film. Two dialogue snippets feature John Lennon, playing the part of Musketeer Gripweed. The song was not used in the film and doesn't appear on the movie soundtrack.

This Lennon rarity doesn't often come up for auction. Labels are in excellent condition with just a little spindle wear. The vinyl has no noticeable marks, just a little dust – I haven't cleaned it as I know different collectors have varying views on cleaning, so I'll leave that to the buyer. It plays great with barely any surface noise, no pops, skips or jumps. It comes in an EMI sleeve from the period – if I can locate a United Artists sleeve of the right vintage I'll include it.

Just to add value to this lot, I will also include as extras of interest a new sealed DVD of the film How I Won The War (PAL), and an A4 photo of Lennon playing the film role, taken from a magazine, in excellent condition (would look great framed). Both are pictured.

This sought after single appears so rarely, I'd suggest you don't miss it. It has sold for up to £400 in the past, but I'll start it at an attractive £99.99.

Questions? Need more photos? Just get in touch – I'd be happy to help.
