This auction is for the SUGAR HILL GANG SELF-TITLED DEBUT RELEASE -- THE RARE 8 TRACK VERSION.
The album was released in February of 1980. It spawned two singles; the #36 hit "Rapper's Delight" and the non-charting "Rapper's Reprise (Jam Jam)". "Rapper's Delight" was the first rap song to hit the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The 8-track is in VERY GOOD condition. I play-tested it just enough to cue it up to the splice. The pads may have to be replaced. They are fully there and they still "give" a little, but they are pushed in a bit (pic #12).
Near the top of the front and back labels there is a slight wave (pics #2 & #7). There are a couple of very small tears along the top edge of the back label (pic #8) The light blue sections of the labels have some light brown spotting. This does not come with the original cardboard slipcover.
I have seen two different label variations for this 8-track. One has the light blue section as seen here, and the other has a black label with white lettering. (By the way, the color is "off" in photo #6, but I can assure you the light blue color of the label in all the other photos is the true label color.)
Finally...the sound. Your can fully hear the music with no problem. However, there is some kind of distortion going on with the hi-hat / cymbal / high end. If you know anything about music, it sounds like a sibilance problem. If you can imagine a "hiss" sound everytime the hi-hat was hit, that's what it sounds like. It's not a constant hiss that you would hear from wear. I don't think it's my 8-track player as I tested other cartridges and didn't hear this problem. Just thought you should know...
